Chen Jian began his journey into the heart of mountains in 1999 and has spent six months each of the last twenty years cultivating relationships with communities, families and forests. From the sublime fragrance and qi of Yiwu huangshan material to the robust character of Lao Banzhang, he has established a standard for premium artisanal tea from Xishuangbanna’s eastern border with Laos (jiangnei) to that of Burma in the west (jiangwai). 

Theasophie's apprenticeship with Chen Jian began in 2006. Every Spring & Autumn for over a decade, we accompanied him throughout Xishuangbanna in pursuit of the highest quality old-growth agroforestry tea. Each of these teas is a potent expression of terroir. Each tea is also a unique chapter in the story of initiation and friendship between Chen Jian and myself.
